1.
The horses in the field where the sun never shines And the lightning storms on the mountainside Where the roses grow Snow settles on those fields where our love grew The colour of fire, if only I knew Where the roses grew Where the roses grow And now there lies a trampled rose The stars in the sky are discoloured by love Like my baby's eyes, when they turn t'wards the dusk Where the roses grow
2.
She lays me 'cross the bed, but and that ain't the hardest thing It's to give your love away to that girl with those tragic eyes We got bills we need to pay and the pawnshop's calling everyday Your mothers diamond ring, you used to wear 'round your neck on an old piece of string But, that ain't the hardest thing To give your love away No, that ain't the hardest thing ͛it's watching as her memory fades slowly away I drove to town the other day on my way to visit my girl I stand in the moonlight, in that graveyard on chestnut hill Where I lay those flowers down and a kiss that I place upon her stone I know I'll cry in the mirror, on those long and winding roads home
3.
I go walking on my own now but nothing feels the same Back when we were together the world was filled with light I catch a glimpse in the mirror, don't recognise my face any longer The love we shared didn't survive the winter, now I'm tired and cold The sun still rises on the blackest of mornings I know the world will keep on turning My love for you is still burning strong But nothing feels the same At night I lie awake and I think of all the things I should've said They repeat inside my head like an echo or a call Now all I have is these four grey walls
4.
The rain fell down on those dirty streets and still I couldn't even speak your name The neon lights burned electric bright in the darkening alleyways I wish I had called, I wish you would've stayed, but there's this bus and it' s taking you away They're closing the doors and they're putting up the chairs In that place we called home for too many years They're closing the doors and they're putting up the chairs Where we used to dance together at the bar I know most people are too broken-up inside that they never get the chance to start again I watch the rivers run rust and the lights paint the sky but I still don't know how she says my name The coffee turns cold and my house feels too big and I'm just counting the days until she's home
