1.
Stopped at the diner, around five in the morning Want to get some coffee, with my oldest friends Been on the road together, all night long, and we're in no mood for goodbyes One more drink before dawn One more night on my own Watching the rain from the hotel room One more drink before dawn Spent all day by the lake, there’s just nothing better to do She’ smiling at me, but I ain't thinking about her And it'll creep up on you, like an old summer rain And you won’t even notice till it’s gone
2.
Lucy locks herself up in her room, on the phone with a boy like me Saying to the voice on the end of the line, "you broke my heart I ain’t coming back" All the lights disappear as she closes her eyes and opens her ears to the sound The sound of the rain, comes falling down, like tears from a girl with a broken heart Lucy I didn’t mean to break your heart All those childhood dreams, they simply fell apart We were two careless kids with porcelain hearts And all those words, they tore us apart Now I’m old Lord, I'm old You rode all the way from Tennessee to New York just to see me But I paid no mind, you weren’t the kind of girl who could really love me As the winter time cracked our love broke like that old photo frame And as the snow came down, it sounded like tears from a girl with a broken heart
3.
Well, the streets round here, they know my name But like my father before me, I don’t belong to them All these empty fields and railway station lines Those car headlamps they wave, as I’m passing by the broken down arcades These empty field and railway station bars Well, I can’t go I’m afraid to stay But I think one day I’ll take my leave Out by that old house where I was born There runs a gravel path that leads to my old home And I know the way, like I know my love My mother stands in the garden in the cold Holding in her hand a flower, a rose As the winter comes I know that my father will hold her close
4.
I’m lying in bed in this old hotel room And I got a towel pressed upon my damp brow I’m sharing some thought with a girl that I’ve just met She’d share with me some things that I would not soon forget I got my windows open in this old hotel And from my room I can hear the ringing of the bells Fills them streets with those people that I don’t know From that little church just down the road I know it’s funny what happens to your memories Some of them linger, some blow away on the breeze But I recall lying on your mother’s floor Them lightning storms, cold roses on the radio
